Innovation STEM Instructor
Paid Internship
The Innovation STEM Instructor Internship will be the collaborator responsible for providing STEM lessons and content to boost curriculum in a new Innovation mobile lab throughout rural North Carolina. The Innovation Instructor will share scientific knowledge and create opportunities for invention, design, and creation for students in Franklin County (and the surrounding areas).
Job Description
The Innovation Instructor Internship will present dynamic science, technology, engineering, and math educational experiences to K-12 audiences and the community. This position will work both independently and as part of a team to develop, refine, and deliver memorable experiences. The Innovation Instructor will participate in training, evaluation, and motivation of other members of the community to participate in the mobile lab and bridge the gap between children and adults to create new career possibilities.
Actively deliver engaging programs while modeling the highest standards of professionalism, inquiry-based techniques, interpersonal communication, and philosophy to create a superior educational experience.
- Scheduled hours will vary based upon school and extracurricular schedules.
- Contribute to marketing, including but not limited to social media posts and an exclusive Innovation lab site.
- The ability to drive an Innovation bus and transport items will be helpful.
- Frequent movement throughout the county, including outdoors, potentially for prolonged periods in varied weather conditions. Includes climbing narrow stairwells and occasionally lifting heavy objects such as supply bins and demonstrations.
- Coach staff and volunteers.
- Proficiently use Google and/or Microsoft Office products.
Programming Responsibilities
STEAM Content Knowledge and Skills
Seek new information and creative new approaches present a variety of content from technology, engineering design processes, physical science, biosciences, and more.
- Research and implement a wide range of informal STEM learning practices.
- Creatively use programming software and digital fabrication equipment such as 3D printers and vinyl cutters.
- Safely work with chemicals and gasses including but not limited to liquid nitrogen, dry ice, nitric acid, methane, corrosive and flammable materials.
Program Delivery
- Be willing to test ideas that may not work, and be resilient under pressure to continue to refine concepts.
- Encourage teachers to use the labs assisting with curriculum developing a new angle of learning.
- Enthusiastically represent the Innovation lab at all schools and community events, including but not limited to outreach programs, and community events. Communicate knowledgeably about STEM programs, policies, and procedures. Serve as a positive and enthusiastic spokesperson for community leaders.
- Assist in evaluating and coaching Novozymes, Franklin County Schools and community leaders in volunteer opportunities to provide a bridge from experiments and learning to career development and future possibilities.
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience Qualifications:
- Current or former student in, STEM or STEM related field of study.
- Preferred a year of outreach and engagement experience

- Ability to demonstrate enthusiastic and entertaining program delivery skills.
- Demonstrated ability or willingness to contribute to development and execution of new program ideas.
- Attention to detail and proficiency in performing routine operational and administrative duties such as scheduling.
- Must have an ability to motivate volunteers.
- Must be self-confident and motivated; able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be detail-oriented and work well within a changing environment.
- Must be open-minded and flexible.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to drive a 32 passenger bus now converted to the Innovation Mobile Lab may be required

Position
- $15.30/hour
- Undergraduate or graduate position
- 15 hours a week year round.
- Commitment of 5-8 hours remote and available either 2 half days to travel with the bus or 1 full day.
